ROSEBUD

The snow is falling on the windowsill
and you keep staring at the floor until
I put my arm around you by the door
and say "I'm not the one they're looking for."

But you merely push my arm away
you never listen to a word a I say
you say "I guess that makes me one of them"
as you pick up the rose and cut the stem

Your coat is long enough to touch the floor
I see it sway as you fly out the door
the coffee stains stare at me from the tile
the rose will start to wilt after a while

I think that I must be asleep by now
I know I'll get up, but I don't know how
but one thing that I never thought before:
I love the way those petals look on the floor
