![]() THE WAY THAT LONDON LOOKS AT NIGHT lt; (Copyright 2000 by Adam Selzer. All rights reserved. ASCAP) Where is Pretty Polly? Over yonder she stood Selling pretty flowers in a red velvet hood Two for a shilling, at the end of every day Blackjack Davey came and took the money away Took her by her hands in their gloves of lily white And red dress up against the way that London looks at night King Henry the Tth* was a one eyed merchant Two corners down selling bottles of black currant He kept Polly's heart, although Davey had her hand They met up every morning back behind the hatter's stand Then went home alone each night, turned down all the lights And looked out his window at the way that London looks at night So Henry the Tth met Pretty Polly at the bar On a moonlit night beneath a spiderweb of stars He brushed a lock of brown hair away from her brown eyes And she said "Blackjack Davey is going to have to die" He said "you get the alley, I'll bring along the knife And we'll add some red in to the way that London looks at night" Back behind the Boar's Head, a few miles from the Strand Davey waited up as Polly walked home from the stands But Henry was beside her, he bid Davey a good day And then pulled out his knife, meant to put the man away Davey had a pistol, but he kept it out of sight And now he brought it out to see the way that London looks at night King Henry took a dagger, and he went for Davey's eye David staggered back, clutched his gun, tried not to die Blindy took his pistol, and blindly fired a round Everybody screamed as Pretty Polly hit the ground Spilled out over Henry's feet, gasping for her life Staring up into the way that London looks at night King Henry is in prison doing twenty-five years hard Davey is a one-eyed merchant, deals in playing cards Where is Pretty Polly? Over yonder she stands With blood on her fingers and flowers in her hands You can see her just a second, out the corner of your eye Before she disappears into the way that London looks at night *- pronouned "teeth"
