AT NIGHT ALL CATS ARE GRAY

intro:You can go out your way and I'll go out in mine
Lila always used to say "no one is made for these times"

She came to me three weeks ago, late one stormy night
a soaking stranger at the door saying "for god's sake bring a light"
she said "by the time I was born Charlie Chaplin was already dead
Sometimes I don't feel alone in my car, but I know that that's all in my head"
She'd been in Minneapolis since sometime in July
since then she'd been on the road but she'd never learned to drive

CHORUS: c'mon and cast that spell
the one I like so well
come on, oh baby run away
oh…. at night all cats are gray (x2 or 3)

She told me once off highway nine, she'd been walking down a path
first she thought she heard a scream then she swore she heard a laugh
She ran until she found a restaurant, it was closed so she broke in
She said "I live by just one rule "it's never just the wind"
she said before she left that I could follow if I liked
and I told myself I'd never let this girl out of my sight

chorus

and so that night out on Annie's Road inside a foggy haze
in winter nights are only made to swallow up the days
and we drove from midpoint past the sunrise out into the fair sunset
and Lila dug in pockets for a couple more of those cigarettes
and looked into my eyes as though she'd known it all along
I just stared out the window as the radio played the same damn song
chorus

what came after Detroit is really a bit of a blur
heaven knows if there really is a Lila in this world
I just remember her eyes when she said to me
"don't worry, man, this won't hurt"
