Some Notes on At Night All Cats Are Grey"

At Night All Cats Are Grey is not so much an album as it is an official bootleg of songs that I was playing live a lot in 1999 and early 2000 - most of the songs are poorly-recorded live tracks or demos. I felt that I had to get the songs out of the way before I could write new stuff.

That said, a lot of people did seem to like it - I still get letters about it. There are songs of which I'm still proud; "Stormy Season" still gets played a lot, for instance. Some may eventually be re-recorded - in fact, "Let The Toast Pass" was short-listed to be on Clark Street Carols early on.
I'm particularly pleased with "St. James," which was a parody of "guess the hidden meaning" type songs. It's about a guy who is gradually coming to realize that his girlfriend is ______."

Recently I listened to the album for the first time in about five years, and found that it wasn't nearly as bad as I thought - keep in mind, though, I thought it was pretty bad. It is still not coming back into print.
